 Poetry Workshop Dates

The Creative Fire of Folklore

Sundays, January 22 & 29, 2022

10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. in the Library. A virtual option is available.

A workshop for poets, led by Susan Comninos.  Following her successful writing workshop recently held at Congregation Gates of Heaven, Susan Cominos is now offering a workshop for poets. Participants will employ techniques for incorporating elements of your own community’s folklore into identity-based poems that can
function as your own ‘origin stories.’ The course will also focus on how the individual poets play the role of an “inheritor” of their family or community’s legacy.

(Poetry continued)

The course will be held across two consecutive Sundays. Day 1 (January 22) attendees will be writing against a folkloric prompt — to choose a line of religious text or a family aphorism, and then interweave that refrain with auditory observations from the day. It’s an approach that shows how the past can inform or intrude on the present, as the refrain shifts in meaning throughout the poem.

On Day 2 (January 29) we will read a short poem by Carolyn Forche (“The Morning Baking”) and discuss how individual poets play the role of inheritor of their family legacy. We will also examine and employ writing techniques for incorporating elements of your own family folklore into identity-based poems that reflect their “origin stories.”

Course is offered Sundays, January 22 and 29 from 10:00-11:30 in the Library. A virtual option is available.

Course is $35 per class; $70 for both sessions.
